Asif Mahmud, spokesperson of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has sent a legal notice to BNP reserve-seat Member of Parliament Bithika Binte Hossain in protest against "defamation." Asif Mahmud himself shared this information in a post on his verified Facebook page tonight (Thursday).
The post reads: "You are aware that since the July mass uprising, the defeated fascist forces and some vested interest groups, driven by political interests, have been consistently spreading various propaganda and attempting to character assassinate of the leaders of the mass uprising. Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain has been the target of various slanders and disinformation for the past two years. However, to date, no one has been able to present any specific allegation or evidence."
It further said: "A few days ago, at a public program, BNP reserve-seat female MP Bithika Binte Hossain alleged that Asif Mahmud demanded 3 crore taka from her for a position as a member of the BCB (Bangladesh Cricket Board). After the matter came to the media, she was contacted on behalf of Asif Mahmud multiple times to ask for evidence to support the allegation or specific details about who demanded money from whom. She repeatedly said she would provide information but did not provide any. Upon repeated contact, she said, 'I was told this.' Later, she said she would inform further and then ceased communication. This makes it apparent that she made the statement with a motivated intention to damage his character."
The Facebook post also stated: "Under these circumstances, Asif Mahmud has sent a legal notice to her. The notice requests her to present evidence in support of her allegation within the next seven days. Otherwise, she must withdraw the statement and issue an unconditional public apology. If she does neither, Asif Mahmud will take necessary legal action against her under the existing laws of defamation."
The post claimed that this ongoing disinformation campaign is not only against Asif Mahmud as an individual but is part of a calculated effort to question the leadership, spirit, and achievements of the July mass uprising. It said that Asif Mahmud is not alone; many others on the side of July have been victims of similar falsehoods and propaganda. From now on, every attempt at falsehood, disinformation, and character assassination will be answered through the law.
