Bangladesh Nationalist Party Secretary General and Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said Sheikh Hasina destroyed democracy in the name of democracy. He said she destroyed every institution of democracy. The main reason for the problems being seen today is that no institutions were properly established here.
The Local Government Minister made the remarks while attending an event organized by the TV Editors Council on Friday morning.
Mirza Fakhrul said democracy and the Awami League do not go together. He said, “They (the Awami League) always talked about democracy, but did the opposite.”
He claimed that the government is being threatened on the streets in the language used by the Awami League and Sheikh Hasina. According to Mirza Fakhrul, “Three or four months have not even passed, and we have already taken to the streets. We are calling the government a failure and saying we will not let it continue for five years. These are the words of fascists.”
At the event, he also spoke about the media. He said, “Democracy means running the country the way the majority of the people want. If there is no democracy in your thoughts, actions and way of life, then you have to understand that it has not been established.”
“We all want to have an excellent media. There will be discussions and criticism. But when you listen to discussions on talk shows, it seems that the government has completely failed and the country has been destroyed. If the media remains strong, democracy will be sustainable,” the Local Government Minister said.
