Home ministry is doing well: Zahed

Prime Minister’s Information Adviser Zahed Ur Rahman said although the home minister faced criticism over the deteriorating law and order situation, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the police are working well.
He made these remarks on Tuesday in a weekly press conference at the Secretariat in Dhaka. He also claimed that the law and order situation has improved compared to the tenure of the interim government.
Concerns regarding the law and order situation arose following attacks on homes in Mohammadpur, Adabor, and Cantonment areas in Dhaka, as well as a land-grabbing attempt of the Radda MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur.
Pointing to these incidents, National Citizen Party (NCP) added that Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed is failing.
Zahed said whenever a law and order problem occurs in the country, the responsibility falls on the Ministry of Home Affairs. However, he expressed his belief that the Ministry of Home Affairs is doing good work and is trying its utmost. He also expressed satisfaction with the performance of the police force.
He recalled the collapse of the police force following the July mass uprising and claimed that the law and order situation has improved since the tenure of the interim government.
Zahed added, “The state in which we received the police force, if we compare it with the interim, certain crimes have decreased.
“Previously, there was anarchy. We saw fires set in two media houses, we saw shrines broken, and we saw women’s sports stopped. Now no anarchy is taking place. We have emerged from a state of anarchy. It is much better now than that. There are some shortfalls, which will start to diminish.”
Zahed acknowledged that despite the overall improvement in the situation, certain incidents are still occurring. However, he affirmed that action is being taken in all of those cases.
When asked whether the government would launch a joint operation to control law and order, Zahed said, “The government will take any decision in the interest of the public. However, that step will be taken within the law.”
