The Parliamentary Standing Committee overseeing the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has sought a list with names and designations of officers who were unethically sent on forced retirement and deprived of promotion in the departments and agencies under the ministry over the past 17 years. At the same time, a list of canceled programs and events has also been asked for.
The matter was discussed at the second meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of the Thirteenth National Parliament held at the National Parliament Building today Tuesday. A decision was taken to present these lists at the committee's next meeting. The meeting was presided over by the committee's chairman, Amanullah Aman. This information was given in a notification from the National Parliament Secretariat.
At the meeting, emphasis was laid on taking into consideration the social impact of Bangladesh Television's (BTV) program and news broadcasting. Instead of transforming BTV into a commercial television channel, advice was given to discharge its responsibility as a media institution accountable to the state and society. For this, the necessity of specifying the institution's aims and objectives was highlighted.
At the meeting, emphasis was placed on giving priority to the importance and relevance of news in news broadcasting. Alongside this, emphasis was also laid on producing and broadcasting programs acceptable to the people.
Discussion was also held on preserving nationally important documentaries and documentary evidence through the Bangladesh Film Archive. In this regard, emphasis was given to including the history of the historic mass uprising of the nineties and the July mass uprising alongside the great Liberation War of 1971.
Recommendations were made to ensure transparency and accountability in the activities of all departments and agencies under the ministry. Besides this, a decision was taken to inspect Bangladesh Television and the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC).
On the occasion of the upcoming Durga Puja, a recommendation was made for all those present at the meeting to cooperate and play an active role so that people of the Hindu community can celebrate their religious festival without hindrance and freely.
Those present at the meeting as committee members included Information and Broadcasting Minister Andalib Rahman Partho, State Minister Yaser Khan Choudhury, Md. Ashraf Uddin Bakul, Mojibur Rahman, Nilufar Chowdhury Moni, Fahmida Haque, Md. Shafiqul Islam, and Mosa. Nazmun Nahar.
Besides this, the Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Directors General of various departments under the ministry, heads of related agencies, and senior officials of the National Parliament Secretariat were present at the meeting.
