IGP Md Ali Hossain Fakir brought up the possibility of “crossfire” if necessary, even while emphasizing adherence to the constitution to maintain law and order.

Speaking on Monday at the inauguration ceremony of Community Bank’s Islamic banking services in Chalkbazar, Old Dhaka, he said, “Our responsibility is to do whatever is needed according to the law and constitution. Where crossfire happens, if necessary, if the government allows, we will do that.”

Domestic and international human rights organizations have long criticized law enforcement agencies for committing extrajudicial killings under the guise of crossfire.

Although Fakir raised the topic of crossfire during the event, he placed greater emphasis on operating within legal parameters.

He added, “We must abide by the law and constitution. Recognizing that police are necessary, let us work according to the law and constitution.”

Highlighting the recovery of the police force following the July uprising, Fakir noted, “From the condition the police were in after the July uprising, under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, we are working to build a happy and prosperous Bangladesh and to provide real peace to the people of the country.”

He claimed, “We have not committed any human rights violations.”

Along with asking the public to assist police in maintaining law and order, Fakir urged citizens not to take the law into their own hands.

He said, “Do not take the law into your own hands. Just because there is freedom, you cannot do whatever you wish. You must stay within the bounds of the law.”

He also urged people to move away from attacking police over every minor issue.

Informing that authorities take action whenever complaints arise against any police personnel, the IGP added, “We also have checks and balances. If we do not take action, then you can question us.”
