Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has finally distributed Eid bonuses to its sanitation workers. The decision came after reports highlighted that the workers had not received the bonus even a month after Eid-ul-Azha, prompting swift administrative action. Following a decision taken on Tuesday night, the bonus was handed over to workers on Wednesday.
At an event held at the Nagar Bhaban auditorium, 4,950 sanitation workers under DSCC each received Tk 5,000. The bonus is part of a special allocation announced by the prime minister.
Earlier on Tuesday evening, DSCC Administrator Md. Abul Salam was asked why the prime minister’s announced Eid bonus had not reached sanitation workers even a month after the festival. That night, the city corporation decided to distribute the bonus.
At the event, Md. Abul Salam said, “Sanitation workers perform the most difficult and demanding tasks in the city corporation. If public awareness and the dedication of sanitation workers continue, it will be possible to transform Dhaka’s appearance within the next two years.”
He thanked sanitation workers for their role in the quick removal of sacrificial waste during this year’s Eid-ul-Azha. He said, “Because of the rapid waste removal, city residents were spared from foul odor this time, which has been widely appreciated.”
He also assured improvements in housing and healthcare facilities for sanitation workers.
Senior officials, including DSCC Chief Executive Officer Md. Zahirul Islam and Chief Waste Management Officer Air Commodore Md. Mahbubur Rahman Talukder, were present at the event.
On May 22, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman handed over the cheque for the special bonus for sanitation workers. By May 26, almost all city corporations in the country had distributed the funds among workers, but sanitation workers in Dhaka South City Corporation had not received the bonus until then.
