Production of urea has been halted again at Jamuna Fertilizer Factory in Sarishabari, Jamalpur, just two days after production resumed due to a leakage in the boiler. The factory resumed fertilizer production on Monday night after remaining shut for eight months.

Fazlul Haque, head of production at the factory, said urea production was halted at around 3:30 am Thursday after a leakage developed in the boiler.

He said, “Everything at the fertilizer factory is operational. Ammonia production is continuing. However, a minor problem has developed in the boiler. I hope the problem will be resolved within one to two days.”

Production at the factory remained suspended for 23 months from January 2024 to November 2025 due to a gas shortage and various mechanical problems. The factory was then shut down again on February 12 this year due to a gas shortage. After receiving a gas connection following an eight-month shutdown, production resumed at the factory on Tuesday night.

Jamuna Fertilizer Factory began operations with a production capacity of 1,700 tons of fertilizer per day. However, due to low gas pressure and various mechanical problems in recent years, the factory had been producing 1,200 to 1,400 tons of fertilizer per day.

Jamuna Fertilizer Factory supplies fertilizer to 21 districts including Jamalpur, Sherpur, Mymensingh and Tangail as well as districts in northern Bangladesh through 1,900 dealers listed with the Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC). With a normal gas supply, the factory produces fertilizer worth around Tk 2 billion per month. Of this amount, around Tk 600 million is profit.

Meanwhile, people concerned said the factory has to pay around Tk 60 million in gas bills every month to keep its machinery operational even when production remains suspended.
