Dhaka Seeks Closer Ties with ASEAN

Bangladesh has expressed interest in deepening its relationship with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and becoming a sectoral dialogue partner of the bloc.
During a recent visit to Malaysia, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said Dhaka is keen to strengthen engagement with ASEAN. The remarks were reported by Malaysia’s state news agency Bernama.
Speaking at a joint press conference on Monday with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Tarique Rahman said Bangladesh is also interested in joining the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).
He expressed gratitude for Malaysia’s support for Bangladesh’s efforts toward regional integration.
“On behalf of Bangladesh, I would like to express my gratitude for Malaysia’s support for our efforts towards regional integration,” he said.
Earlier, the two leaders exchanged a memorandum of understanding on cultural cooperation, along with two notes covering counter-terrorism research and the expansion and facilitation of investment.
Tarique Rahman said Bangladesh looks forward to continued and close cooperation with Malaysia on issues of mutual interest. He added that the agreements would further strengthen bilateral ties and maintain positive momentum in relations between the two countries.
“We look forward to working closely together towards mutual prosperity, regional peace, and a more inclusive international system,” the government head said.
He also extended a personal invitation to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his wife to visit Bangladesh.
In 2025, total trade between Malaysia and Bangladesh stood at USD 2.84 billion. Malaysia’s exports to Bangladesh amounted to USD 2.35 billion, mainly petroleum and fuel products.
Imports from Bangladesh stood at USD 500 million, dominated by ready-made garments, textiles, and footwear.
Bangladesh is Malaysia’s 28th largest trading partner globally, with total trade reaching 12.18 billion ringgit. In South Asia, Bangladesh is Malaysia’s second-largest trading partner, export destination, and source of imports after India.
