Background and Process
The Returning Officer and EC Joint Secretary, Moin Uddin Khan, had previously released the valid list of the 49 candidates at the Election Building.
Earlier, the EC canceled the nomination paper of Monira Sharmin, Joint Convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP). Meanwhile, the court directed the EC to accept the nomination of another Joint Convener of the party, Nusrat Tabassum. Regarding this, the Returning Officer stated yesterday, "We have no information regarding anyone appealing in court against the EC's decision. However, candidate Nusrat Tabassum submitted a copy of a court verdict to the Commission. The EC has been asked to settle this matter within 72 hours."
Timeline of the election was as follows:
April 21: Deadline for submission of nomination papers. A total of 53 candidates submitted papers for 50 seats. Four nominations were rejected during the verification process.
The deadline for withdrawing candidacies expired at 4:00 PM this Wednesday.
Although the election for the reserved women's seats was originally scheduled for May 12, all 49 candidates were elected unopposed as there were no competing candidates for the respective seats.
However, one seat currently remains vacant. The Election Commission will decide on the schedule for that seat or the next steps following the court order regarding the additional candidate at a later date.
