Jamaat warns govt over long march obstruction

Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar said the government could face public wrath if the ruling party, its affiliate organizations, or any part of the administration obstructs the 11-party alliance’s long march heading toward Chattogram.
He made these remarks while presenting the final preparations for the long march at a press conference of the 11-party alliance held on Friday at the Jamaat’s central office in Moghbazar, Dhaka.
Porwar added, “This program is not a movement to oust the government. Providing administrative cooperation and showing respect to the programs of opposition political parties is the beauty of democracy.”
He announced that a rally at 7 am on Saturday in Shapla Chattar, Dhaka will kick off the long march. Following the rally’s conclusion at 8 am, the motorcade will depart from there toward Laldighi via the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway.
The long march’s first wayside rally will take place along the Chattogram Road. After holding brief roadside meetings in Cumilla and Chauddagram, the convoy will advance toward Laldighi in Chattogram by passing through Feni and Mirsharai.
Porwar noted that it is the first major political program by opposition parties since the government assumed power. Their demands include stopping narrow partisan politicization, completing the trials for the July uprising, and respecting the public mandate delivered through a referendum.
Moreover, the alliance organized the long march to protest the rising prices of essential commodities, and to demand visible improvements in law and order, crime control, and an end to the electricity, fuel, and fertilizer crises.
Porwar expressed hope that the government would accept the opposition’s six-point demands and respect the democratic process by offering administrative cooperation.
