Bangladesh and US sign civil nuclear cooperation agreement

Bangladesh will receive cooperation from the United States for the peaceful use of nuclear energy. The two sides have signed an agreement for this purpose.
The BNP Media Cell announced the signing of the agreement on strategic civil nuclear cooperation on its Facebook page on Saturday.
On behalf of Bangladesh, Prime Minister's Adviser for Science and Technology Rehan Asad signed the agreement. US Under Secretary for Economic Affairs Jacob Helberg signed it on behalf of the United States.
Diplomatic sources said the agreement was signed as part of the continuation of a nuclear cooperation initiative that began in 1981 during the rule of Ziaur Rahman.
The agreement will increase technological exchanges between Dhaka and Washington as well as scientific cooperation in nuclear safety and the civilian energy sector, the source said.
Bangladesh is already receiving Russian cooperation for the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Work on the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in Pabna has made significant progress.
