The fire broke out at the garment factory at around 14:45 on Saturday.
Saidul Alam Chowdhury, deputy assistant director of Gazipur Fire Service, said the fire broke out at Matrix Garments factory in the Fakir Market area of Degerchala in Gazipur City at around 14:45 on Saturday, October 3. Initially, three units from the Gazipur Chowrasta Modern Fire Station joined the operation to bring the fire under control.
As the fire grew in intensity, one unit from Konabari Fire Service, three units from Gazipur Fire Service and two units from Rajendrapur Fire Service later joined the operation. A total of nine units worked to bring the fire under control. The fire was later brought under control, he said.
He further said the fire broke out on the third floor of the seven-story factory building. Fire Service personnel rescued 70 people who fell ill from the smoke and sent them to various local hospitals.
He said efforts to control the fire were hampered by the lack of ponds or other water sources nearby and the absence of a firefighting system at the factory.
