New president to be elected in Sept session: Law minister

Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman said the new president will be elected during the September session of Parliament.
He confirmed the information on Saturday at a meeting held at the CIRDAP auditorium in Dhaka. The human rights organization Odhikar organized the discussion, which was titled “Human Rights Abuses and Access to Justice for Victims”.
Asaduzzaman added that a situation necessitating a special session to elect a president has not arisen. He did not comment regarding cases involving the former president.
Former president Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned on Friday as 22nd president. According to the constitution, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad has assumed the duties of the acting president.
Meanwhile, BNP, intends to appoint someone loyal and reliable to the post of president. In this regard, the party may choose an experienced politician from within the party rather than a bureaucrat or a teacher.
The ruling party’s leaders observe that, in the past, they faced crises by appointing individuals who lacked the experience to handle pressure during political turning points.
According to party sources, the names of four senior BNP leaders are being discussed as potential candidates for the presidency. They are the party’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, and Standing Committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Abdul Moyeen Khan, and Nazrul Islam Khan.
However, some suggest a surprise could come from outside this list, a decision that depends entirely on Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
