Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has hinted at his preferred team for the FIFA World Cup, although he did not directly name any country when asked by journalists.
He made the remark during a media interaction with journalists at the China Friendship Conference Centre in Dhaka on Tuesday.
During a conversation with BNP beat reporters, the discussion turned to the ongoing FIFA World Cup. Journalists asked the Prime Minister which team he supports.
In response, Tarique Rahman smiled and said, “I lived in a country for a long time.”
Although he did not explicitly mention England or the United Kingdom, journalists present interpreted his comment as an indication of support for the England national football team, given his long stay in London.
Tarique Rahman had spent over a decade and a half in London due to political and legal circumstances.
Following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in the July–August 2024 mass uprising, he returned to the country. Later, after the BNP secured a majority in the 13th National Parliament elections held in February, he assumed the office of Prime Minister.
The brief comment generated significant interest among journalists, as many believe his long residence in London has influenced his apparent preference for England in the World Cup.
The interaction primarily focused on current political issues, media freedom, and the government’s future plans. However, the informal exchange on football added a light-hearted moment to the event.
