China has assured Bangladesh of its continued support in efforts to resolve the Rohingya crisis, Prime Minister's Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir said on Thursday.
Speaking at a press conference in Beijing, Kabir said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman raised the Rohingya issue during his meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang earlier in the day.
According to Humayun Kabir, the prime minister described the Rohingya crisis as one of Bangladesh's major security concerns.
“The Rohingya crisis is one of Bangladesh's key security challenges. We want to resolve this crisis,” Tarique Rahman told the Chinese premier, Kabir said.
In response, Li Qiang said China welcomes Bangladesh's application to join the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), according to the adviser.
Humayun Kabir said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman remains committed to protecting Bangladesh's sovereignty and will not compromise on issues of national interest.
“He will pursue a strong foreign policy based on firm diplomacy and dialogue,”Humayun Kabir said.
The adviser noted that Rahman emphasized China's role in helping resolve the Rohingya crisis and stressed the need for both bilateral and multilateral cooperation.
According to Kabir, the Chinese premier responded positively and assured Bangladesh of China's support in addressing the crisis. China also pledged assistance in facilitating dialogue with the Myanmar government on the issue.
Highlighting various aspects of the prime minister's visit to China, Humayun Kabir said several agreements had been signed between the two countries.
Among them, he said, is an agreement related to the construction of a China-Bangladesh Friendship Hospital.
“The meeting between the two prime ministers in Beijing today and yesterday's bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum demonstrate that global leaders are now paying attention to the new Bangladesh,” Humayun Kabir said.
Prime Minister's Office spokesperson Mahdi Amin and Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman also addressed the press conference.
