Police, hawkers clash in Mirpur 10 over eviction drive

A clash broke out between police and hawkers following an eviction drive against illegal footpath occupancy in Mirpur 10, Dhaka on Wednesday.
DMP Mirpur Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Naser Rikabdar confirmed the matter. He said the situation is under control and additional police have been deployed at the scene.
According to witnesses, the DNCC conducted an eviction drive to free footpaths in the Mirpur 10 area. At the time, an electric wire snapped and fell, causing a fire to spread on the west side of the Baitul Quddus Jame Mosque. Then the hawkers and footpath traders attacked the eviction team.
At one point, they torched at least three garbage trucks and vandalized a police vehicle along with an excavator deployed for the drive. Upon receiving information, two units of the Fire Service brought the fire under control.
Meanwhile, hawkers attacked a journalist who was attempting to capture photographs and video footage of the location. Samakal photojournalist Mahbub Hossain Nabin reportedly suffered injuries in the attack.
