Bangladesh sought the cooperation of Bhutan to reactivate the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).

Prime Minister of Bhutan Dasho Tshering Tobgay made a stopover on Friday at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA). Local Government Minister Abdul Moyeen Khan and State Minister of Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir welcomed him at the airport.

During the reception, Bangladesh requested the country’s support to revive SAARC for the joint welfare of the region and its people. The two ministers highlighted the vision of former president Ziaur Rahman for a prosperous South Asia, reports BSS.

In the brief conversation, the Bangladeshi ministers conveyed greetings to Tobgay on behalf of the Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. They expressed Bangladesh’s interest in contributing to the development of Bhutan’s Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), by supplying professionals along with skilled and semi-skilled manpower.

Bilateral matters of mutual interest were also discussed during the meeting. They also praised the friendship between the two countries, which was established after Bhutan became the first nation to recognize Bangladesh in 1971.

The Ambassador of Bhutan to Bangladesh and senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were present at the meeting. Tobgay stayed in the VVIP lounge for about an hour before departing for Germany.
