NCP Announces 100 Candidates for Local Elections

Indicating a tough political battle in the upcoming local government elections, the NCP has announced candidates for 100 upazilas and municipalities across the country. In this first phase, the party finalized names for mayoral candidates in 33 municipalities and chairperson candidates in 67 upazilas.
The announcement came during an emergency press conference held Sunday afternoon at the party’s temporary central office in Banglamotor, Dhaka. The NCP Local Government Election Management Committee organized the briefing.
Committee Chairman Sarjis Alam said this was only the beginning. He added that the party will announce another list of 100 candidates in a second phase before the holy Eid-ul-Azha on May 20.
Sarjis Alam, along with committee members Tahsin Riaz, Alauddin Mohammad, and Manjila Jhuma, and NCP divisional organizational secretaries Imran Imon, Md. Ataullah, and SM Suja, announced the candidates division-wise during the press conference.
Who Can Be NCP Candidates?
At the press conference, Sarjis Alam issued a strict message regarding candidate eligibility. He said NCP keeps its doors open for hardworking and acceptable individuals. Even clean-image individuals from other political parties can apply to become NCP candidates. However, there is one strict condition, they must have no involvement in past repression or fascist activities, and they must have no criminal record.
Acknowledging organizational limitations ahead of the 13th parliamentary election, NCP leaders said they are now fully prepared based on lessons learned from the past. While the decision on forming alliances will be taken before the election, the party is currently moving forward independently.
Sarjis Alam said, “A party that dreams of becoming the ruling party in Parliament by 2036 cannot sit idle waiting for alliances. That is why we are fielding candidates independently.”
According to NCP sources, more than 1,000 applications were submitted from 500 upazilas and 330 municipalities in the first phase. After multiple rounds of scrutiny and detailed evaluation, the party has initially finalized 100 candidates.
It is noted that earlier, on March 29, the NCP announced mayoral candidates for five city corporations. The party is expected to announce candidates for the remaining eight city corporations soon. In today’s press conference, party leaders also demanded that the government hold local government elections as soon as possible.
