Clash at Jagannath University
A clash broke out among activists of Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal, Islami Chhatra Shibir and Chhatra Shakti outside the auditorium during a seminar on the July uprising at Jagannath University. The university administration has formed an investigation committee to take appropriate action in this regard.
The information was disclosed through a notice signed by the university's acting Registrar, Professor Sheikh Gias Uddin, at 3 pm on Tuesday.
The notice said that a discussion meeting was held at the central auditorium of Jagannath University today to observe July Mass Uprising Day 2026. University Grants Commission Chairman Professor Mamun Ahmed was the chief guest at the discussion meeting. JNU Vice Chancellor Dr. Md. Rais Uddin was the special guest.
During the discussion meeting, an incident involving chasing, counter chasing and attacks among some students took place outside the central auditorium. As a result, the reputation of the university was seriously damaged. An investigation committee has therefore been formed with the following members to investigate the incident and recommend action against those involved.
The four member investigation committee comprises Professor Mostafa Hasan of the Department of Social Work, Professor Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman of the Department of Chemistry, Associate Professor Md. Mezbah Ul Alam Sowdagar of the Department of Political Science and Deputy Registrar Md. Shahidullah.
Meanwhile, regarding the incident, JNU Chhatra Dal Convener Mehedi Hasan Himel told Agamir Somoy, “Professor Mamun Ahmed, chairman of the UGC, was present at a program organized by the Jagannath University administration on the July Mass Uprising. To make the chairman controversial, Chhatra Shibir and its affiliated organizations had made prior plans to insult the chairman. We politely asked them to move away, but they did not. At one point, when they came forward, a fight broke out. Many Chhatra Dal leaders and activists were injured in the attack.”
JAKSU Vice President Riazul Islam said, “The UGC chairman was present at a seminar on the July uprising at Jagannath University today. At that time, Chhatra Dal activists stopped some students, including members of JAKSU and Inquilab Mancha, from entering with placards carrying several demands. When I tried to take them inside, the Chhatra Dal branch convener and others pushed and shoved us. Members of the proctorial body were also present at the time. The vice chancellor came outside and tried to calm the situation. Later, as the students were not allowed to enter, they continued their sit in protest outside. But after the program ended, Chhatra Dal activists who had gathered attacked us in front of the Shaheed Minar.”
Injured JNU Chhatra Shakti President Shahin Mia said, “When we came out of the auditorium after the program ended, Chhatra Dal terrorists attacked all of us. They kept beating my secretary, the JAKSU vice president, general secretary, assistant general secretary and everyone else. They humiliated and drove the vice president, general secretary and social welfare secretary out of the campus. They are threatening me.”
The JNU administration said administrative measures are being taken to determine the next steps regarding the incident.
