A video has gone viral on Facebook showing a woman being assaulted by a youth leader in Noakhali’s Subarnachar upazila, triggering widespread criticism and discussion in the area.
The incident reportedly took place around 11:00 am today Saturday in Char Lakshmi village of the upazila.
The victim, Taslima Akhtar Khuki (35), is the wife of Md Khalil Driver of the same village. The accused, Md Shafik (38), is a former general secretary of Ward No. 7 of the Mohammodpur Union Jubodal and the son of Samsuddin Molla of the Montarago Bari area.
According to Taslima Akhtar Khuki, her husband had been working under Shafik for the past two months but had not received his wages. When he asked for his salary, Shafik claimed that her husband had spent all the money on yaba consumption. Even during Eid-ul-Adha, the family reportedly struggled as wages remained unpaid. She later advised her husband not to continue working for Shafik, which allegedly angered him.
She further stated that on Saturday morning Shafik tried to take away a ring net installed in a river near their house. When they tried to stop him he allegedly beat her husband severely using a plastic pipe with an iron rod inserted inside it. Later around 11:00 am Shafik returned again with his brother in law Noore Mawla and resumed the assault on her husband. When she tried to protect him she was also severely beaten.
Khuki alleged that Shafik runs a yaba drug business at his project site and had been using her husband to manage the illegal operation. She also claimed that drug users frequently visit the project area.
Denying the allegations youth leader Md Shafik said he had a long friendly relationship with Khuki’s family. He claimed that a few days earlier her husband tried to open the door of his sister’s house and stole fish from his pond. He also alleged that while carrying the net on Saturday morning Khuki and her husband attacked him and broke his nose.
Char Jabbar Police Station Officer in Charge Md Lutfur Rahman said “No written complaint has been received so far in this incident. If a complaint is filed necessary legal action will be taken after investigation.”
