Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant added an automated control system supplied by Automated Control Systems, a subsidiary of Russia’s State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom.
The system comprises nearly 20,000 pieces of equipment under 43 subsystems. Through these components, more than 7,000 process-related parameters, including reactor stability, will undergo continuous monitoring.
Project officials expect that the addition will ensure the safe and efficient operation of the facility. Another crucial component of the setup is the Operator Information Support System, which was developed using a digital replica of the power unit, known as digital twin technology.
The system has already been connected to the first unit and is participating in initial commissioning activities, while the same system will also be installed in the second unit.
Analyzing data from 360 process-related systems, the technology identifies potential deviations and advises operators based on more than 80 guidelines, including emergency action instructions.
By presenting complex operational data in a simplified manner, it will enable operators to make data-driven decisions and manage situations more effectively.
Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev said Rooppur is not only the largest cooperation project between Russia and Bangladesh, but it is also their pioneering project in employing modern automation and control technology. This is the first time such a support system is being implemented at a facility constructed by Rosatom abroad.
He claimed that the system will reduce response times in emergency situations, lower operational costs, and serve as a reliable assistant for control room staff. Located in Ishwardi, Pabna, the plant under construction is Bangladesh’s first nuclear power project.
Consisting of two modern-technology VVER-1200 reactors, each unit of the plant has a capacity of 1,200 megawatts, bringing the total capacity to 2,400 megawatts. Atomstroyexport, the engineering division of Rosatom, is executing the construction work for the project.
