Miscreants have cut down around 600 bean plants belonging to a farmer under the cover of darkness in Nawabganj, Dinajpur. The affected farmer, Hafizul Islam (50), claimed that the incident caused him a loss of around Tk 300,000.

The incident took place in Maldah village under Ward No. 7 of Daudpur Union in the upazila early Thursday.

Hafizul Islam said he had cultivated around 600 bean plants on 25 decimals of land, investing approximately Tk 60,000. The plants had produced a good yield. He had expected to earn around Tk 300,000 if he could sell the beans at the prevailing market price.

Hafizul Islam said he had dreamed of meeting his family’s financial needs with the money earned from selling the produce. However, unknown individuals cut down the bean plants under the cover of darkness. The incident has shattered his long-standing efforts and dreams.

Local resident Shariat Islam said farmers work hard and invest considerable effort to grow crops. He described the cutting down of 600 bean plants under the cover of darkness as extremely unfortunate.

He said farmer Hafizul Islam had suffered a major financial loss. He called for a proper investigation to identify those involved and take necessary action against them.

Another local resident, Rahena Begum, said a farmer’s produce was one of the main sources of income. Hafizul Islam had taken care of the bean plants with high hopes. Their destruction had caused him an irreparable loss.

She said the administration should take prompt action to prevent the recurrence of such incidents. She also called for a proper investigation and legal action against those responsible.

Abdul Quddus, officer-in-charge (OC) of Nawabganj Police Station, said he had learned that around 600 bean plants belonging to farmer Hafizul Islam in Maldah village had been cut down.

He said necessary legal action would be taken following an investigation if a written complaint was filed.
