Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has described historic November 7 as the day for identifying Bangladesh's friends and foes. He said the day is significant and glorious for patriotic, freedom-loving, and democracy-loving people.
The day is known as the National Revolution and Solidarity Day.
The Prime Minister came up with these observations while attending a special exhibition organized at the Army Stadium in the capital's Banani on Saturday morning. His wife, Dr. Zubaida Rahman, was also present at the event.
On this day in 1975, the historic uprising of soldiers and the masses took place, through which then-Major General Ziaur Rahman was freed from captivity.
In his remarks, the Prime Minister said that on this day in 1975, patriotic soldiers and the masses unitedly thwarted all conspiracies against the country's independence and sovereignty. November 7 was the day for identifying Bangladesh's friends and foes in the country's history.
The army chief, air force chief, cabinet members, members of parliament, senior government officials, and diplomats and ambassadors of various countries were present at the event.
At the event, Tarique Rahman said that in the first week of November 1975, plots and conspiracies against Bangladesh reached extreme proportions. In continuation of that conspiracy, then-army chief Lieutenant General Ziaur Rahman was placed under house arrest along with his family in the midnight hours following November 10.
He pointed out that the conspiracy against the country's interests that began by keeping the declarer of independence captive was thwarted unitedly by soldiers and the masses. That is why November 7 is a beacon of the spirit of national unity for patriotic nationalist people.
The special event was organized under the direction of the Ministry of Defence and under the overall supervision of the armed forces. Three thousand cadets of the Bangladesh National Cadet Corps (BNCC) and 500 members of Bangladesh Scouts are participating in the exhibition.
Earlier in the morning, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman paid tribute and offered prayers at the graves of former President and BNP founder Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.
