BMU Revokes ABM Abdullah’s Emeritus Status, Seeks Salary Refund

Dr. ABM Abdullah
Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) has revoked the appointment of Dr. ABM Abdullah as an emeritus professor. The university authorities have also ordered him to return all salary and allowances he received under the position.
The university announced the decision in an office order signed by Registrar Professor Dr. Mohammad Mostafa Kamal on Wednesday.
The office order said the university’s 92nd syndicate budget session, held on June 20, 2024, amended the “Emeritus Professor Appointment Ordinance” following a proposal raised by a syndicate member outside the meeting agenda. The same meeting subsequently appointed Professor Dr. ABM Abdullah as an emeritus professor for life. The university authorities said the appointment violated existing regulations and was therefore not approvable.
As a result, the university has canceled his lifetime appointment as an emeritus professor in accordance with the decision of the 92nd syndicate meeting. The authorities have also instructed him to return all salary and allowances he received as an emeritus professor from the date of that meeting to the university treasury.
Speaking to the media on the matter, Professor Dr. ABM Abdullah said he has already received the letter regarding the decision. He alleged that the university administration had treated him unfairly and unjustly.
