AkijBashir Group has been onboarded as a member of RE100, becoming the first company in Bangladesh to join this leading global corporate renewable energy initiative. RE100 is led by Climate Group, an international non-profit organization working with businesses and governments to accelerate the transition to a clean and sustainable economy.
Through this commitment, the Group is reinforcing its transition toward 100% renewable energy across its operations and placing renewable energy at the centre of its long-term approach to responsible industrial growth.
RE100 brings together more than 400 businesses globally that have committed to using 100% renewable electricity by 2050 at the latest. Members report progress annually, while renewable electricity claims are reviewed against RE100’s technical criteria. The initiative also provides access to peer learning, renewable-energy expertise, policy engagement and international best practice.
For a diversified industrial group such as AkijBashir Group, RE100 provides a globally recognized framework to make its renewable-energy journey more structured, measurable and transparent. It can help the Group strengthen accountability around renewable electricity sourcing, benchmark progress against international practice and reinforce credibility with global customers and partners. At the same time, membership connects AkijBashir Group with a wider network of businesses working through many of the same challenges involved in scaling renewable electricity.
The RE100 commitment builds on renewable-energy and energy-efficiency investments already taking place across AkijBashir Group. Across its particle board, ceramics, glass and other manufacturing facilities, the Group has developed around 90 MW of solar generation capacity and continues to expand its renewable-energy portfolio.
At Akij Ceramics in Trishal, a 24.39 MWp rooftop solar project is expected to generate approximately 28,050 MWh of clean electricity annually and reduce around 22,440 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year. Of the total capacity, 10 MW has been connected to the national grid through net metering, demonstrating how industrial renewable-energy projects can support both factory operations and the wider power system.
AkijBashir Glass in Habiganj has installed an 18.2 MW rooftop solar system supported by battery energy storage, helping the facility use solar-generated electricity beyond daylight hours and reduce exposure to load-shedding. The glass facility also combines solar power with waste-heat-recovery steam-turbine generation, and AkijBashir Group reports that 71% of the facility’s energy is sourced from renewables. Waste heat from the glass-melting process is also recovered and used to generate steam and electricity, improving the efficiency of an energy-intensive manufacturing process.
Across its manufacturing operations, AkijBashir Group is expanding the use of renewable energy to support both decarbonization and energy security. At Janata Jute Mills, rooftop solar meets the mill’s full electricity demand, supported by battery storage that extends renewable-energy use beyond daytime generation. Meanwhile, Akij Particle Board Mills has installed an 8.1 MWp rooftop solar photovoltaic system, expected to generate approximately 9.3 million kWh of clean electricity annually and avoid around 7,452 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.
These initiatives are supported by broader investments in energy efficiency and resource conservation. AkijBashir Group has worked with Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL) on multiple renewable-energy and energy-efficiency projects, while its manufacturing businesses continue to explore measures such as waste-heat recovery, water reuse, net metering and more efficient production technologies.
Sk. Bashir Uddin, Managing Director, AkijBashir Group, said, “Joining RE100 is more than a renewable energy commitment for AkijBashir Group; it is a step towards transforming how we power our business and build sustainable growth. As the first company from Bangladesh to join this global initiative, we are proud to take a pioneering step towards 100% renewable electricity. We believe the future of business must be built on both growth and responsibility. Through this commitment, we aim to contribute to Bangladesh’s transition towards a cleaner and more resilient energy future, while inspiring other businesses and industries to accelerate their journey towards renewable energy. Together, we can create lasting value for our business, our people, and Bangladesh.”
AkijBashir Group will remain committed to progressively changing how industrial growth is powered, while contributing to a cleaner, more resilient energy future for Bangladesh and advancing the Group’s broader philosophy of Beyond Tomorrow.
AkijBashir Group is a diversified industrial conglomerate in Bangladesh, operating across ceramics, glass, jute, tableware, bathware, cables, biax films, doors, steel buildings and board industries, with a focus on quality, innovation, and sustainable growth. The Group continues to invest in advanced technologies, responsible manufacturing, and renewable energy to create lasting value for its customers, communities, and the country.
