DNCC Administrator Safiqul Islam Khan Milton has formed a monitoring team in Mirpur-10 to keep footpaths free from illegal occupation.
He confirmed the matter in a post on his verified Facebook page on Saturday. The post said the monitoring team will regularly inspect the area. If anyone sets up any shop or structure by occupying the footpath, authorities will seize the goods and equipment.
The post added that authorities will take legal action against those involved.
On 30 September, the DNCC launched a drive to clear illegal occupations on the footpaths extending from the Mirpur 10 roundabout toward Hope Market. At one point, a clash broke out between hawkers and shopkeepers and police and city corporation workers.
During the clash, people set three DNCC vehicles on fire, vandalized a police vehicle, and attacked journalists.
Around noon, Safiqul went to the scene and workers cleared shops on the footpaths on both sides of the road from Mirpur 10 to Mirpur 13. Prior to the drive, hawkers occupied Lane 11/1 and 11/2 of Block B in Mirpur Section 10 surrounding Hope Market, the footpath adjacent to Baitul Quddus Jame Mosque, Mirpur Adarsha Girls’ High School, and a large portion of the road and footpath of Avenue-2 in Block C.
They set up shops by tying bamboo and wood to the boundary wall of the footpath, covering them with polythene and tarpaulin canopies. They also set up temporary shops in two to three rows inside the main road.
These shops primarily sold women’s and children’s clothing, shoes, jewelry, cosmetics, and various other products. There were also shops selling fuchka, chotpoti, and fried snacks.
