A gas leak triggered a fire that burned three family members, including a child, in Vatara Natun Bazar area of Dhaka on Tuesday
National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (NIBPS) Resident Surgeon Shawon Bin Rahman confirmed the matter. The victims have been identified as Md Shahin, 24, his wife Fahima Akter, 21, and their niece Hafsa, 8.
Shahin is an employee at a clothing store in Dhaka. His colleague, Md. Jasim, who brought him to the hospital, said Shahin lived as a tenant on the ground floor of a six-story building in the Natun Bazar area.
According to Jasim, the family was asleep at dawn when a loud explosion occurred in the room, followed by a fire. They sustained burns and were rescued and rushed to the hospital. The fire is believed to have originated from a leak in the gas line.
Shawon said the three sustained burns on 50 percent of Shahin’s body, 45 percent of Fahima’s, and 40 percent of Hafsa’s. He added that their condition is critical.
