Health center vandalism: Shah Ali police station OC removed

Following questions over the police role during the vandalism of a health center, Jahangir Alam has been removed from his post as officer in charge of Dhaka’s Shah Ali Police Station.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmad ordered the withdrawal of OC Jahangir on Sunday.
Inspector Jahangir has been attached to the Central Reserve Department under the Police Headquarters and Central Administration Department. The order said the move was taken for administrative reasons.
However, during an inspection of the Radda MCH-FP Center on Saturday, DMP Commissioner said an investigation was underway to determine whether there had been any negligence by police in preventing the vandalism.
The private health center in Section 1 of Mirpur in Dhaka was vandalized around midnight last Thursday. On Saturday, measles vaccination was conducted under tarpaulins in front of the demolished building.
Nasrin Akhter, executive director of Radda MCH-FP Center, filed a case with Shah Ali Police Station over the attack. Police said 13 people have been arrested in the case.
Allegations have been raised that police were present during the attack but took no action.
Responding to questions about the matter, the DMP Commissioner said preventing such incidents falls within the responsibilities of the police. He said an investigation was underway to determine whether there had been any negligence by police.
A three-member committee has been formed to investigate the incident. The deputy commissioner of DMP’s Mirpur Division has been made head of the committee.
