BNP Secretary General and Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has spoken about the ongoing political discussion and speculation over who will be the next president. He said the name of the next president will be finalized at the party’s Standing Committee meeting. Before that, he declined to make any comment on the matter.

He made the remarks on Saturday afternoon while responding to questions from journalists after the 36th Annual Planning Conference at the auditorium of the Rural Development Academy in Bogura.

Earlier, while addressing the conference as the chief guest, Mirza Fakhrul said the country’s policies must be updated to keep pace with global changes. He said improving the skills of young people, creating employment opportunities and ensuring greater access for Bangladeshis to the international labor market should be among the government’s top priorities.

According to him, the Constitution guarantees every citizen and professional the right to dignity and access to services. He said the state must play a responsible role in ensuring those rights are realized. He also called for moving away from confrontational politics and giving priority to education, humanitarian values and sustainable development.

The conference was chaired by Mohammad Shawkat Rashid Chowdhury, Secretary of the Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Division. Speakers included Dr. Rafiqul Mohammad, Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Members of Parliament Rezaul Karim Badsha, G M Siraj, Mosharraf Hossain and Suraiya Zerin Rony.

The keynote paper was presented by Dr. Md. Abdul Majid Pramanik, Acting Director General of the Rural Development Academy. He said the marginalized people of developing countries are being affected the most by various crises, including global conflicts, inflation, climate change, food security and energy security. He also said that years of political and economic mismanagement have weakened the country’s economic foundation.
