The northeastern part of the country is facing increasing flood risks as continuous rainfall and upstream water pressure have pushed the water levels of seven rivers above the danger mark. The Water Development Board (WDB) shared this information in its flood forecast on Monday morning.
According to the agency, moderate to very heavy rainfall has been recorded across various areas in the northeast, including Netrokona and Habiganj, over the last 24 hours. Both Jariajanjail in Netrokona and Habiganj recorded 74 mm of rain. Simultaneously, rainfall in the Meghalaya and Assam regions of India has further intensified the pressure of water flowing downstream.
According to BWDB, as of 9:00 AM, several points along seven rivers in three districts of the Haor basin are flowing above the danger level:
The affected basins would include the Naljur, Dhanu-Baulai, Someshwari, Bhugai-Kangsha, Mogra, Kalni, and Sutang rivers in Sunamganj, Netrokona, and Habiganj districts have crossed the danger mark at various points.
While water levels have receded in some areas, the overall river levels in the Haor region are gradually rising. Experts fear that if this trend continues, low-lying areas will be inundated.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has indicated that gusty winds and rain are likely across various divisions today, with the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall in some places. Based on WDB forecasts:
Sylhet and Sunamganj: Water levels in the Surma and Kushiyara rivers are expected to rise further over the next few days, potentially creating flood situations in low-lying areas adjacent to the Haors.
Netrokona and Kishoreganj: Although water levels in some rivers remain stable, existing flood conditions are expected to continue.
Habiganj: The Sutang River remains above the danger level, with no immediate signs of improvement in the water situation.
Bangladesh Watwer Development Board has said the Manu, Khowai, and Juri rivers are currently stable but are expected to rise in the coming days. There is a particular concern that the Juri River may rise rapidly and touch warning levels.
