The names of nine recommended candidates hailing from Gopalganj district did not appear in the final gazette of the 49th BCS (Special) examination. It is learned that seven of them are former students of Dhaka University and one is a student of Barisal University. Several candidates have expressed anger over their names not being in the gazette despite being ahead in the discipline-wise merit list.
On Wednesday (September 30), the final appointment gazette of the 49th BCS was published. In it, 611 people were appointed to the Bangladesh Civil Service (General Education) cadre. Earlier, 668 people had been nominated for temporary appointment in the final results of the PSC. As a result, the names of 57 people did not make it into the final gazette. However, the reason for their exclusion was not mentioned in the notification.
According to information obtained, among the left-out candidates from Gopalganj, Md. Noornabi Sheikh of the 2016-17 academic year of the Finance and Banking department of Dhaka University was fifth in the subject-wise merit list. Ahmmad Ullah of the 2014-15 academic year of the Accounting department was first and Sohag Mandal of the 2016-17 academic year was in third position.
Besides, Biplob Barai of the 2017-18 academic year of the Sanskrit department was fifth, Sheikh Arafat Kabir of the 2019-20 academic year of the History department was 15th, Bushra Jahan of the 2017-18 academic year of the English department was 14th, Shafiqul Islam of the 2011-12 academic year of the Philosophy department was 25th, and Md. Rakibul Islam of the 2017-18 academic year of the Economics department was 37th.
On the other hand, Md. Sazzad Hossain of the 2018-19 academic year of the Accounting department of Barisal University was 30th in the subject-wise merit list.
When asked about his name not being in the gazette, Sheikh Arafat Kabir said he and no one in his family is involved in any political activity and that there is also no criminal case against him. He also said he actively took part in the July movement.
He said the names of all nine recommended candidates from Gopalganj are absent from the final gazette. He claimed they could not learn any reason as to why their names did not appear in the gazette despite their positions in the subject-wise merit list.
Md. Noornabi Sheikh, who was also left out of the gazette, expressed anger as well. He claimed there is no criminal or civil case against his name and that neither he nor anyone in his family is involved in the activities of any political party.
Noornabi Sheikh said he was at the front line during the July 2024 movement. He claimed that in the period after the movement, he also took part in night guarding to protect security in Dhaka. In his words, he believes he was left out because he is a resident of Gopalganj.
However, no government information or document was found stating that these candidates were left out because of their Gopalganj identity. The reason for the names of 57 candidates not being in the final gazette was also not mentioned.
