A total of 422,905 students who failed in one or two subjects in the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent examinations will get another opportunity to sit for the exams. The Ministry of Education is planning to hold the examinations within a month.
The decision has been taken considering the need to ensure that students do not lose another year of their academic lives.
According to data from the Ministry of Education, 298,040 students failed in one subject in this year’s HSC and equivalent examinations. Meanwhile, 124,865 students failed in two subjects. In total, 422,905 students who failed in one or two subjects will have the opportunity to sit for the examinations again.
An analysis of the results shows that English had the highest number of failed students this year. A total of 243,528 students failed the subject, accounting for nearly 41 percent of all students who failed.
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) ranked second, with 138,493 students failing the subject. This represents approximately 23.29 percent of the total number of students who failed.
This means English and Information and Communication Technology are the two subjects in which the highest number of students may have to sit for the examinations again. As the number of students who failed these subjects is comparatively high, special attention will be given to them when arranging the retake examinations.
According to the Ministry of Education’s plan, examinations for students who failed in one or two subjects will be held within a month. Although it may be possible to hold the examinations within seven or 15 days, authorities are considering giving students sufficient time to prepare.
However, delaying the examinations for too long could affect admission processes at universities and colleges. Therefore, the ministry plans to schedule the examinations without allowing more than a month to pass.
According to relevant sources, there are a total of 53 subjects across all groups in the HSC examinations. However, based on the subject-wise data of students who failed, question papers for approximately 30 subjects will need to be prepared for the retake examinations.
The Ministry of Education and education boards will have to work together to coordinate preparations and determine the examination schedule.
Education Minister A.N.M. Ehsanul Haque Milon said, “We will hold the examinations within a month for those who failed in one or two subjects. This is to ensure that they do not lose another year in the future. This is our next plan.”
He said, “The Prime Minister wants everyone to be assessed properly based on what they have done. No one should be unfairly evaluated. We must deliver transparent results.”
Noting that this year’s results indicate learning gaps among students, the education minister said this was a reflection of reality. The ministry and education boards would work to address these gaps. Parents and teachers would also have to cooperate in this regard.
