Reports suggesting that six subjects, including Bangla, History, and Philosophy, are being removed from the undergraduate level have been dismissed as completely false by Education Minister Ehsanul Hoque Milon. He said that there has been no discussion within the government or the Ministry of Education regarding such a move, let alone any decision, and urged people not to be misled.
The minister made these remarks while speaking to journalists at the Secretariat on Monday afternoon.
He emphasized that Bangla is the mother tongue, questioning how it could possibly be removed as a subject. Referring to Philosophy as a “mother subject” at the honors level, he reaffirmed its academic importance.
Earlier, Chief Advisor on Information and Broadcasting Dr. Zahid Ur Rahman also commented on the issue. Speaking at a press briefing in the Department of Information’s conference room, he told journalists, “I have also seen this news. Until there is an official statement from the government, people are requested not to give importance to such reports.”
He further said that he does not believe honors programs in these subjects will be discontinued, though discussions may take place regarding how widely they are offered or in how many universities. He added that Bangladesh needs a skilled workforce, noting that around 2.1 to 2.2 million people enter the job market every year, while only about 700,000 to 800,000 jobs are created in the public and private sectors combined.
