Azmul murder case accused Rifat arrested

RAB has arrested Hasnat Habib Rifat (30), one of the keys accused in the murder case of Azmul Hossain, a student of North Western University in Khulna.
A joint operation team of SRB 6 Khulna and SRB 8 Barishal arrested him during a raid in the Kuriana Adabari area of Nesarabad in Pirojpur at around 2:30 am on Monday.
Rifat is a resident of Gunerghati village in Sirajganj Sadar. He is a cash officer at the Town Nawapara branch of Bangladesh Krishi Bank.
Major Md Nazmul Islam, deputy commander of SRB 6, said Rifat, one of the keys accused in the Azmul murder case, was arrested based on secret information.
He said Rifat confessed to his involvement in the murder during interrogation. He was later handed over to Harintana Police Station for legal action. An operation is underway to arrest the other accused in the case.
Meanwhile, police are searching for another accused in the Azmul murder case, mess manager Mehedi. He has not been found yet. Police have also been unable to confirm his full identity and address. He has been absconding since Saturday morning.
Mehedi is a former student of Gopalganj University of Engineering and Technology. He lived in Room D-2 of a mess in Sarwar Hossain’s four-story house on Islamnagar Road behind Khan Jahan Ali Hall of Khulna University. He was also the manager of the mess.
Police said Mehedi was accompanying Azmul when he was taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital by ambulance in critical condition after being beaten. He went missing after a doctor declared Azmul dead at the hospital.
Harintana Police Station Officer in Charge Iqbal Hossain said efforts are underway to identify Mehedi and determine his address as well as arrest him. Operations are also continuing to arrest the four named accused in the First Information Report and others involved in the murder.
Azmul’s father Md Qutubuddin alleged that not all the accused have been arrested even three days after the murder. He claimed that the house owner should have the addresses of the accused including mess manager Mehedi. He said important information about the murder could be obtained if Mehedi is arrested quickly.
Azmul’s body was found outside a four-story mess on Islamnagar Road behind Khan Jahan Ali Residential Hall of Khulna University in the city on Friday night. He was a first-year student of North Western University and lived in the mess.
Azmul’s father Qutubuddin filed a case at Harintana Police Station on Saturday night. Four people were named in the First Information Report and another 20 to 25 unidentified people were made accused.
