12-kg LPG price rises by Tk 252

The price of a 12 kg LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) cylinder in the private sector at the consumer level has been increased from Tk 1,585 to Tk 1,837. At the same rate, the prices of cylinders ranging from 5.5 kg to 45 kg have also increased.
On the other hand, the price of LPG used in vehicles (auto gas) has been fixed at Tk 84.62 per liter, up from Tk 73.09. However, the price of the 12.5 kg cylinder of LPG supplied by the state-owned company has been kept unchanged at Tk 825. Although its supply is so low that it does not reach the general public.
Today, Sunday, the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) announced the new rates.
BERC said the prices were increased in the country due to the rise in prices in the global market. The new prices will come into effect from 6 pm today.
LPG prices increased after the war began in the Middle East. Then, when the ceasefire began, LPG prices started to fall in the global market. For several months, prices have been fluctuating.
BERC has been setting LPG prices every month in line with international market prices. When this pricing was first introduced on April 12, 2021, the price per cylinder was Tk 975. During this time, prices sometimes increased, sometimes decreased, and sometimes remained unchanged. However, the number of price increases has been higher.
In January of this year, the price of 12 kg LPG was fixed at Tk 1,253. In February, it rose to Tk 1,356; due to a VAT reduction, it fell by Tk 15 to Tk 1,341; in March, there was no change; then in April, it increased by a total of Tk 599 in two phases — first by Tk 387 and later by Tk 212 — bringing the cylinder price to Tk 1,940.
After that, there was some relief: in June, it was reduced by Tk 55, and in July, by Tk 357; in August, it was increased again by Tk 70 to Tk 1,598; and most recently, in September, it was reduced by Tk 13, fixing the price of a 12 kg cylinder at Tk 1,585.
At the same time, the prices of LPG of other weights and auto gas have been adjusted proportionately.
