Their Target: The capital's 'elite doctors'

The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested four members, including the mastermind, of an organized gang that has been threatening extortion and murder against prominent physicians and high-ranking professionals in the capital. According to the DB, the gang systematically collected addresses and family information of esteemed individuals and demanded large sums of money.

At a press conference held at the DMP Media Centre on Sunday afternoon, Additional Commissioner (Detective) Shafiqul Islam disclosed this information.

Those arrested are: Sunny Saha (38), Fatin Israk Labib (20), Evan, and Jibon.

Shafiqul Islam said that on July 27, five miscreants stopped the car of Professor A. K. M. Aminul Haque, an ENT medicine specialist at Anwar Khan Modern Medical Hospital, on Road No. 4 in Dhanmondi and threatened him. Later, on the night of August 17, Professor Dr. Asadur Rahman of the ENT, Head & Neck Surgery Department at Dhaka Medical College Hospital left after examining patients at Popular Diagnostic Centre in Shantinagar to head home. As he was getting into a CNG auto-rickshaw on the paved road in front of the diagnostic centre, he was attacked by the gang. Local residents caught one of the attackers, identified as Jibon (alias Adil), and handed him over to police. The victim doctor filed a case over the incident.

Investigation reveals names of 'Evan' and 'Sunny'

The DB said that after interrogating the arrested Jibon, DB police arrested a person named Evan from Lakshmipur. Based on Evan's confession, it was revealed that they are part of a professional syndicate that targets wealthy and established individuals in the country, gathering their professional and family information. Subsequently, the gang's mastermind, Sunny, and his associate Fatin Israk Labib were arrested from the Bhatara area of Dhaka.

Sunny's 'Sinister' Plan After Returning from Singapore

The DB chief said that the gang's mastermind, Sunny, had worked in Singapore on a labour visa from 2022 to 2025. While there, he became involved in the hundi (illegal money transfer) business and was defrauded of about 5 crore taka. After returning to the country, driven by the obsession to recover that huge amount and compensate for his losses, he ventured into the criminal world. While living in the Bashundhara area, on the advice of an acquaintance, he formed this "target syndicate."

Seven-member Group and Attack Tactics

The DB said that the gang basically operated as a group of seven members. One of their victims was Professor Dr. Aminul Haq of the Internal Medicine Department at Anwar Khan Medical College. On July 27, he was similarly stopped, assaulted, and demanded money. A knife and a sword approximately 25 inches long, used in extortion, have been recovered from the arrestees. Consequently, they have also been charged under the Arms Act.
