A court has shown former Desh Tv managing director (MD) Arif Hasan arrested in the murder case of a private car driver in Dhaka.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ripon Hossain issued the order on Thursday following a hearing. The deceased was named Babul.
During the hearing, Assistant Public Prosecutor Harun Or Rashid argued for the necessity of the arrest, saying that Arif was a “financier of the Awami League”. He added that Arif “played a role in suppressing the July movement” and noted that his name had emerged during the investigation of the case.
In response, Arif’s lawyer, Tahmina Sultana, argued that her client is a businessman and the MD of Desh Tv who is not involved in any politics. She highlighted his physical condition, stating that he is ill and has four rings (stents) in his heart.
Sultana added that Arif is being arrested to tarnish his reputation and for harassment. She informed the court that bail applications have been submitted in nine cases so far, and that additional cases against him remain.
Earlier, the Investigating Officer Sub-Inspector Md Abu Sayeed of Bimanbandar Police Station, had applied to show him as arrested in this specific murder case.
The case stated that attacks were carried out against students and the public during the July 2024 mass uprising. On 18 July, Babul was critically injured by gunfire opened in Uttara, Dhaka.
Babul died on 19 July while receiving treatment at Uttara Women’s Medical College Hospital. Following the incident, the victim’s wife, Surma Begum, filed a murder case at the police station on 22 July.
