Shapla Chattar genocide case proceedings begin 27 July

Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam said the submission of the case report and the proceedings for the Shapla Chattar genocide case will begin on 27 July.
He confirmed the information on Saturday during a meeting held at the CIRDAP auditorium in Dhaka. The human rights organization Odhikar organized the discussion, which was titled “Human Rights Abuses and Access to Justice for Victims”.
The defendants named in the case are ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former army chief Aziz.
The accused who have been arrested include former state minister for Home Affairs Shamsul Haque Tuku, retired major general Ziaul Ahsan, former minister Dipu Moni, former inspector general of police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Haque, former police DIG Mollah Nazrul Islam, President of the Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee Shahriar Kabir, former DIG Abdul Jalil Mondal, and journalists Farzana Rupa and Mozammel Babu.
According to prosecution sources, the tribunal showed former minister Dipu Moni and journalists Farzana Rupa and Mozammel Babu arrested on 14 May. Earlier, on 7 May, the prosecution had applied for a production warrant against them.
Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim told the tribunal, “It was propagated internationally that law enforcement members eliminated a group of unruly people during the operation at Shapla Chattar on 5 May 2013, with which there are allegations of Dipu Moni’s involvement. At the same time, allegations of provocative broadcasting regarding that incident through Ekattor Television were also brought against Farzana Rupa and Mozammel Babu”.
The prosecution added that a total of 58 people were killed in four locations across the country, including Dhaka in Shapla Chattar genocide. According to the investigation agency, the identities of 32 victims have been identified in Dhaka, 20 in Narayanganj, 5 in Chattogram, and one in Cumilla.
