Independent Member of Parliament Rumeen Farhana has expressed strong anger and dissatisfaction over the country’s law and order situation. She raised concerns over killings, abductions, and violence against women during the government’s first 100 days in office.
She spoke on Monday during the second session of the 13th National Parliament, standing under Rule 71. Deputy Speaker Kaisar Kamal chaired the session.
Citing statistics from a Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) report, Rumeen Farhana claimed that the crime graph in the country has surged sharply in the first 100 days of the government. She said that in March and April alone, there were 605 murders, 294 robberies, 90 cases of dacoity, and 196 abductions reported across the country. During the same period, 129 attacks on police were recorded, along with 2,214 cases of theft.
Highlighting the severe deterioration in the safety of women and children, she said, “During the period under discussion, there were 3,496 incidents of violence against women and children. Among them, 78 to 102 people were raped, 30 to 36 were victims of gang rape, and 49 to 71 children were raped. These figures clearly show how fragile and alarming the country’s law and order situation has become in the past three months.”
She added, “Fifty percent of the government’s success or failure will depend on the economy and law and order, while the remaining 50 percent depends on other ministries. If the home minister had been present in Parliament, it would have been easier to present this record of failures more clearly.”
