A member of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) was stabbed to death in Sylhet on Friday, and the suspected attacker briefly took a child hostage while trying to flee but was arrested.
The incident occurred around noon on May 22 in the Keane Bridge area of the city. Sylhet Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mainul Zakir confirmed the details.
The deceased, identified as Iman Acharya, was a member of Rapid Action Battalion-9, according to preliminary information. The suspect, Asadul Alam Bappi, was later arrested.
Police said that around 12:00 pm, officers chased a group of suspected drug users who were sitting near Keane Bridge. As Bappi attempted to flee, a RAB member in plain clothes intercepted. Bappi then allegedly stabbed the officer and escaped, entering a residence in the Topkhana area.
Inside the house, Bappi held a knife to a child’s throat and took the child hostage. Police cordoned off the area and, after prolonged efforts, rescued the child unharmed and arrested the suspect.
Iman Acharya was taken in critical condition to Osmani Medical College Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at around 1:30 pm.
