Police seek remand for MP Nazrul, first wife to get 5 questions answered

Police have brought G M Nazrul Islam, the Member of Parliament for the Satkhira-4 constituency, and his first wife, Maksuda Islam, to a Dhaka court after arresting them in connection with a case filed over provoking his second wife, Marium Khatun, to commit suicide.

The investigating officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Md. Shamsujjoha Sarkar of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, presented them before the Dhaka court today (Monday) and filed a petition seeking a seven-day remand for interrogation.

The remand application states that interrogating Nazrul and Maksuda is necessary to find answers to five key questions surrounding Marium's death.

The investigating officer seeks to determine what Nazrul and Maksuda were doing when Marium's hanging body was recovered, as well as whether either of them played a role in abetting her suicide.

Furthermore, the investigating officer considers their interrogation crucial to uncovering the role and current location of the absconding accused, Obaidur Rahman.

Additionally, the remand was requested to identify unnamed suspects and to uncover the primary motive behind the incident.

The remand petition will be heard in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ehsanul Islam.

After being brought to court at noon, Nazrul and Maksuda were placed in the court lockup.

Yesterday evening, following the recovery of Marium's body from Nazrul's flat in the NAM Building, Nazrul and Maksuda were taken into custody by the Tejgaon Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

Later that night, Marium's father, Masum Billah, filed a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, alleging abetment to suicide against Nazrul, Maksuda, and Nazrul's brother-in-law, Obaidur Rahman.

Veteran politician Nazrul is an MP representing the Satkhira-4 seat, having been elected under the Jamaat-e-Islami banner.

Last July, after an intimate video involving Marium surfaced, Nazrul announced his second marriage. His first wife also confirmed the news at the time.

However, Jamaat-e-Islami expelled him from the party on grounds of moral turpitude, though he retained his parliamentary seat.

Following that incident, Nazrul had been living with his second wife in a flat in Building 5 of the MPs' residential area on Manik Mia Avenue, where Marium's hanging body was ultimately found.
