Worker Run-Over: Teenage driver sent to juvenile correction center

A 17-year-old teenager who was behind the wheel of a car that ran over and killed a construction worker resting on the pavement in Baridhara, Dhaka, has been sent to a juvenile correction center.
On Thursday, Judge Md. Abdul Moktadir of Dhaka Children's Court-8 ordered the teenager to be sent to the Tongi Child Development Center in Gazipur.
Meanwhile, defense lawyer Alamgir Hossain said that a settlement of Tk 900,000 has been reached with the victim's family. The plaintiff of the case, Muktadir Islam, also acknowledged the compromise.
Lawyer Alamgir Hossain said, "The construction worker's family is very poor and does not wish to pursue the case. They originally demanded Tk1 million, but a settlement was agreed upon at Tk 900,000. Following an application, he was sent to the child development center. We will apply for his bail on Sunday."
The settlement deed states that there was no prior enmity between the two parties and that the incident was entirely unintentional. Considering the overall situation, the dispute was settled and a trade-off was reached. As assistance for the funeral arrangements of the deceased Mehedi Hasan, the first party provided Tk100,000 in cash initially, followed by an additional Tk800,000. Mehedi's family agreed to the settlement for a total of Tk 900,000. According to the agreement, Mehedi's family will take effective measures to withdraw the case.
The teenager was produced in court on Thursday. Following this, the investigating officer of the case, Gulshan Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Arefin Islam, applied to hold him in the child development center.
Earlier on Tuesday around 5:00 PM, the accident occurred on the pavement of Road 1 in the Baridhara Diplomatic Zone. A speeding private car lost control and ran over Mehedi while he was resting on the sidewalk. He was subsequently taken to Kurmitola General Hospital, where attending doctors declared him dead.
Following the accident, bystanders detained the teenager found in the driver's seat and handed him over to the police. However, after questioning, he was released into his uncle's custody that night.
The victim's brother, Muktadir Islam, filed a case with Gulshan Police Station on Wednesday. Police said that since the teenager's name was not listed as an accused in the case, he had been released.
However, after public criticism mounted over the matter, police arrested the teenager on Wednesday night.
Another accused in this case, Akash Mark, remains at large.
