A court has denied the bail application of Actor Zaher Alvi and ordered him to be sent to jail regarding the abetment of his wife Afra Ibnat Ikra’s suicide.
Earlier, Alvi surrendered in court and sought bail in a case involving the abetment of his wife Afra Ibnat Ikra’s suicide.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin issued the order on Thursday following a hearing. Alvi is also known as Niamat Ullah Bhuiyan.
Ikra committed suicide around 1:30 pm on 28 February at a residence in Mirpur DOHS, Dhaka. Alvi shared the news of his wife’s death in a Facebook post, writing, “My wife Ikra committed suicide at our home. I was filming in Nepal. Since hearing the news, I have not been in a state to speak. I do not understand why she left like this without thinking about our child and me.”
According to the case details, family members rescued Ikra after finding her hanging from a ceiling fan with a scarf. Relatives and the house owner then rushed her to Kurmitola Hospital where doctors pronounced her dead.
Ikra’s father, Kabir Hayat Khan, filed the case at Pallabi Police Station that same night. He alleged that Ikra was forced to commit suicide due to long-standing family feuds and various types of torture.
Alvi and Ikra were married in 2010 and have a son together. Earlier, on 4 June, Alvi’s mother, Nasrin Sultana Shiuli, surrendered in connection with the case and was granted bail.
