Email threats to various embassies, police investigate

Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police (DB) chief Md. Shafiqul Islam talks to journalists.

Police are investigating the threats sent via email to several foreign embassies in Dhaka.

Today, Sunday, Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police (DB) chief Md. Shafiqul Islam disclosed this information at a press conference held at the DMP Media Centre on Minto Road in the capital.

The DB chief said that a specific criminal gang is sending emails over the internet threatening various embassies in the diplomatic zone and attempting to extort money. This gang uses the bKash numbers of ordinary and innocent people while posting emails—people who themselves are unaware that their numbers are being used for this purpose.

The DB reported that threat emails of this nature have been sent to four foreign embassies, including those of China, Pakistan, and Turkey, as well as to several government offices.

The DB chief stated, "According to our preliminary assessment, this may not be merely extortion; it could also be an attempt to harass someone or stem from personal enmity. Additionally, it is believed that one of the gang's objectives is to create panic among foreign ambassadors and embassies, thereby tarnishing the country's image."

Shafiqul Islam said, "We are trying to identify the gang."
