Abu Sayeed Murder Case: Former VC of Begum Rokeya University Arrested

Former Vice-Chancellor Hasibur Rashid, a convict in Abu Sayeed murder case, has been arrested.
The Mohammadpur Police arrested Hasibur Rashid, the former VC of Begum Rokeya University, from a residence on Salimullah Road in Dhaka on Saturday evening.
Hasibur Rashid is an accused in the murder case of Abu Sayeed, a student of Begum Rokeya University. The International Crimes Tribunal sentenced him to 10 years in prison in connection with the case.
The arrest was confirmed by Md. Jewel Rana, the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of the Mohammadpur Zone of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
He stated that the former VC, Dr. Md. Hasibur Rashid, is a convict sentenced to 10 years in prison in a case involving crimes against humanity committed during the July 2024 mass uprising. Police are currently verifying the total number of cases filed against him.
Notably, on July 16 during the 2024 quota reform movement, Abu Sayeed, a student of the English Department at Begum Rokeya University, was shot and killed by the police.
On that day, students surrounded the residence of Vice-Chancellor Hasibur Rashid, demanding his resignation. He later left the campus under tight security provided by law enforcement forces. However, he resigned on August 8. The former Begum Rokeya University VC had been in hiding ever since.
