DMP arrests 5 over Shyamoli land-grabbing attempt

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested five people on charges of attempting to occupy an eight-story house and launching an attack in Dhaka’s Shyamoli Housing area.
DMP Media and Public Relations Division Deputy Commissioner Akhtar Hossain confirmed the matter on Monday, although authorities have not yet disclosed their names and identities.
Relatives of the owner reported that a group of 20-25 individuals armed with local weapons attacked and vandalized the property around 6:30 am on Saturday.
Monir Hossain, the nephew of owner Aminur Rahman Khan, said the attackers initially opened the main gate and ordered everyone inside to leave. When no one emerged from the building, the attackers began issuing threats from outside while demanding money, before repeatedly hacking at the gate with machetes and cleavers.
Describing the destruction, Monir added, “The attackers vandalized the CCTV camera in front of the gate and window glass. Later, they broke the glass of two more windows on the second floor with pieces of brick.” Tenants then notified the police.
Moreover, Monir claimed that illegal occupiers had previously taken over the building following 5 August 2024. A man named Khorshed Alam occupied the house on 17 August 2024. After filing a complaint at Adabor Police Station produced no solution, the family filed a lawsuit in court and recovered possession of the property through a court order on 12 March.
