Police filed a case over the assault and harassment of Kazi Ahmed Zaki, director of the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR).
Banani Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Salauddin confirmed that Zaki filed the case on Thursday.
OC Salauddin said the lawsuit named Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB) leader Zahid Hasan along with 15-20 unidentified individuals as accused.
On Wednesday, eight to nine outsiders entered the IEDCR director’s office and harassed and assaulted Zaki. A meeting was underway inside the director’s room at the time of the incident, where representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) were present alongside others.
After the incident, the director told the media, “DAB people created a mob and caused this incident.”
On the day of the incident, DAB issued a letter suspending the primary membership of Zahid Hasan, co-legal affairs secretary of its Central Executive Committee. The organization asked why it should not take organizational action against him, setting a 48-hour deadline for Zahid Hasan to respond to the letter.
