Former shipping minister Shahjahan Khan said NCP has become Jamaat-e-Islami.
He made this remark after the hearing of a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) over allegations of acquiring illegal wealth. The court showed Shahjahan Khan and his son Asibur Rahman arrested.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Shahjahan Kabir passed the order on Monday and sent them to prison. Speaking after the hearing, Shahjahan added, “NCP has merged with Jamaat-e-Islami and become Jamaat-e-Islami.”
Their defense lawyer Mizanur Rahman Badshah applied for bail. The court scheduled 15 October as the date for the bail hearing. Although the date was scheduled for submitting the investigation report, the ACC failed to submit it. As a result, the court fixed 25 November as the deadline to submit the report.
Following the fall of the Awami League, the party whose activities are banned, DB Police arrested Shahjahan from Dhanmondi on 5 September 2024. On 26 September 2024, authorities arrested Asibur from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. They have remained in prison since then.
While they were in custody, ACC Deputy Director Kamalesh Mondal filed the case at ACC Integrated District Office-1 on 2 February. The case named Shahjahan and his son Asibur as accused.
Later, on 7 September, the investigating officer of the case, ACC Assistant Director Mahathir Muhammad Sami, applied to show them arrested.
According to the case details, Asibur was found to possess movable and immovable assets totaling Tk 11,79,05,248 in his name. However, the inquiry revealed his actual source of income to be Tk 1,89,99,183.
The case added that Shahjahan, while serving as a MP and minister, abused his power to directly and indirectly assist his son Asibur in acquiring these movable and immovable assets using illegally acquired funds.
