The government has hired a law firm in Dubai to cancel the conditional bail of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed and bring him back to Bangladesh as soon as possible. At the same time, the process of collecting a certified copy of the bail order is also underway, said Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed.

He told journalists about this development today (Sunday, August 02) in the afternoon after an exchange of views with Rajshahi Range and Rajshahi Metropolitan Police officers at Rajshahi Police Lines.

The Home Minister said, "I have heard that Benazir Ahmed has received conditional bail from a Dubai court. I have spoken to the Bangladeshi ambassador in Dubai regarding this matter. Efforts are underway to obtain a certified copy of the bail order."

The Home Minister expressed hope that they would be able to bring Benazir back to the country swiftly through legal procedures.

According to media reports, a court in the United Arab Emirates granted Benazir Ahmed's bail application on July 27. After completing all legal formalities, he was released on July 30. According to the court's conditions, his passport will remain in the court's custody, and he cannot leave the UAE without the court's permission.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is investigating Benazir Ahmed on various charges, including acquiring illegal assets, money laundering, and passport forgery. Six cases have been filed against him regarding these allegations. Among them, one case is currently under trial, and the rest are under investigation.

Following the investigation, an Interpol Red Notice was issued against Benazir Ahmed on April 11, 2025. Based on that notice, Dubai Police arrested him. Later, on June 12, the UAE authorities informed the Bangladesh government about the matter via email.

Subsequently, the government sent the necessary documents through diplomatic channels and formally applied for Benazir's extradition. Later, the Dubai authorities sent a letter to Bangladesh expressing in-principle consent to the extradition, along with a request for further information and clarification. While that process was ongoing, news of his release on bail emerged.

Earlier in the day, as the chief guest at the first-phase training completion parade of the 27th BCS (Police) batch at the Bangladesh Police Academy in Sardah, Rajshahi, the Home Minister said that the police will work as a symbol of friendship and trust for the people, not as a hired goon force for any particular group or party. The government is working to transform the police force into a modern, efficient, people-friendly, and party-influence-free institution.

Special guests at the event included – Land Minister Md. Mizanur Rahman Minu, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md. Ali Hossain Fakir, Principal of the Bangladesh Police Academy G. M. Azizur Rahman, Divisional Commissioner of Rajshahi Dr. A. N. M. Bazlur Rashid, DIG of Rajshahi Range Md. Ashik Said, along with senior police officials and invited guests.
