Police have arrested Masukur Rahman Sumon, the chief advisor and director of the prominent e-commerce platform E-Orange Dot Shop. He was apprehended from the Dholaikhal area of the capital on Tuesday.
The arrest operation was led by Sub-Inspector (SI) Mahfuzur Rahman of Gulshan Police Station. He stated that there are multiple cases filed against him at various police stations, and a court arrest warrant had also been issued. Based on these, he was taken into custody.
Earlier, the court had issued arrest warrants against six individuals, including the platform's owner Sonia Mehjabin and her husband, Masukur Rahman Sumon.
The warrant was issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam after charges were framed in a case of embezzlement through fraud.
The other accused in the case are—E-Orange Dot Shop's patron Sheikh Sohel Rana, Chief Executive Officer Amanullah Chowdhury, and directors Zayedul Firoz and Naznin Nahar Bithi.
The case alleges that E-Orange officials lured people through online advertisements offering various products at low prices. Falling for this lure, the complainant paid a total of Tk 585,700 to the accused's company between May 23 and June 3, 2021, for three motorcycles and a laptop. Although there was a condition to deliver the products within 45 days, they failed to do so.
The complaint further states that despite repeated reminders, the accused did not deliver the products. When the complainant visited the E-Orange office on November 14, 2014, the accused threatened him with death instead of returning the money.
It is worth noting that hundreds of cases have been filed against E-Orange across the country on charges of embezzling customers' money through fraud.
